Pastels: Soft, sensuous color!
Learn to use soft pastels to create a lush, colorful flower study. We will demonstrate different types of soft (chalk) pastels together with several optional supports such
as velour board, clayboard, pastel paper and gessoed watercolor paper. Gentle, patient instructor guidance and encouragement allows you to move forward at your own pace or follow directions step by step. We share the process from the initial drawing through the laying down of a variety of tones, layering the medium and blending the surface to create the velvety, rich colors you love.
Sunday September 26th, 2-4 p.m.
Watercolors: splish, splash, let your inner artist swim free!
Although watercolors are often regarded as an easy introduction to making art, the medium can be notoriously challenging. In this class your instructors take the pressure off by guiding you through a simple preliminary sketch of a landscape, followed by step by step instruction in how to mix and apply the watercolor for a successful result. Through simple yet effective techniques such as washes, sprays, drips and textures, we will help you create an attractive sophisticated piece ready to frame.
Thursday October 7th, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Create a portrait with Charcoal:
charcoal is a wonderfully expressive, rich and forgiving medium which is also inexpensive and simple to explore. Using charcoal powder we will create a middle tone ground and will work into that with an eraser, blenders and charcoal pencils. Your instructor will guide you through the initial drawing to ensure correct proportions and shapes. You will be thrilled to see how sophisticated your result turns out to be!
Thursday October 21st 6:30 – 8:30 p.m
Colored Pencil Painting:
Yes, the lowly colored pencil has become a gentle giant in the world of art. With new technology, we have colored pencils of endless variety, price and texture. Artists are creating both small and large paintings in styles ranging from abstraction to photo realism and in this class, you will learn about the materials on the market today and how to use them. Layering, blending, scraping, burnishing and cropping and matting your work all add to the “pop”. We will create a small study of butterflies which will be ready to frame.
