Artist's statement The natural world, as manifested in the simple, breathtaking beauty of humble fruits and vegetables, flowers and leaves, landscapes and skies, is a constant comfort and inspiration. To delve into the richness and the subtlety of colors, textures and shapes, to feel those through the hand that traces the contours and paints the color, that is my joy. Making art is a quest for perfection. One strives with every mark, to render faithfully what the eye sees. One strives to capture light, color and form, with honesty and love. Interpretation and metamorphosis of perceived reality is to me, our human gift. I love the challenge of a fine drawing pen, which traces contours with an unerring eye and unforgiving seriousness. I love the sensuous touch of the brush as it washes watercolors in unexpected stains, and the diligent dab of the brush loaded with paint on a gently responding canvas. The greedy smears of oil pastels and the blooming clouds of soft pastels are all a joy and a constant challenge to one's skills. When people see my work, I would hope that they enjoy the imagery and are led to look more deeply at the textures and the changes of colors and tones. I would like the moment of seeing the work to be a peaceful yet joyful moment in their day. Jillian Goldberg June, 2008
